About Chas

Welcome to the prominent industrial town of the Jharkhand, Chas. It is the twin city of Bokaro district in the Indian state of Jharkhand and has embedded in the urban part of Bokaro Steel City. Historical Background of Chas

The small town of Chas has its own history to narrate. It was once a small grain trading center of the region but came into the limelight especially during the period of Second World War when the Britishers explored this place as a base to supply soldiers fighting in the eastern region against Japan. After the independence, the Indian government decided to establish the Bokaro Steel Plant in the region and thus the economic activity of this place went forward. Further, when Bokaro was a part of Dhanbad district, Chas was the administrative headquarters of the area but when Bokaro was made district itself then the headquarters were shifted to the Bokaro Steel City.

Geography of Chas

The town of Chas is situated at 23.63°N 86.17°E and has an average elevation of 210 meters i.e. 688 feet. Chas is surrounded by the villages namely Khamar Bendi, Choura, Bharra and Kamaldih while the nearby blocks to the town are Chandankiyari block towards East, Baghmara block towards North, Jaridih block towards West and Bokaro block towards North. The temperature here is generally hot in the summer season and remains colder in the winter season. During the summer season, the months of April - June have the maximum temperature of 45°C but when the winters come, the temperature dips down to 10°C-12°C particularly in December and January. The rainy season comes during the end of July and remains throughout August till the starting months of September.

Demography of Chas

The total population of Chas is 141,618, according to the 2011 Census of India. Of the total population, there are 75027 males and 66591 females in the town. Moreover, the average literacy rate in Chas is 85.12% that means there are total 105,417 literate persons in which 60459 are males (92.16%) and 44958 are females (77.19%). Besides that, the children with age group of 0-6 constitute 15% of the total population.

Administration of Chas

The town of Chas is administered by Chas Municipal Council (CMC), which was established in the year 1977. Initially, the town came under the Chas-Bokaro Municipal Corporation (Chas Nagar Nigam), as per the 2005 notification of the Government of Jharkhand. But later, the municipal boundary of Chas municipality was reduced by the Urban Development Department, Government of Jharkhand by excluding Bokaro Steel City, Bandhgora and Kamaldih village. The Chas Municipal Council performs the responsibility to provide all the basic amenities to the people of the town.
